Suicide bomber attacks Borno mosque, kills worshippers

An explosion at Molai, a suburb of Maiduguri, the Borno State capital on Thursday had killed an unspecified number of people in a mosque.

A member of the youth vigilance group, Abba Yunus, told our correspondent on the telephone that the explosion occurred at a mosque beside a mini market in the village, which is about 15 kilometres from Maiduguri on the way to Damboa road.

He added that the Improvised Explosive Device, which was detonated at about 6.30pm, was strapped on a suicide bomber.

He said the blast went off just when Muslims were preparing for the evening prayer.

Yunus said the casualty figure remained unknown as of the time he called as humanitarian workers and military persons were at the scene of the explosion to evacuate the dead and assist the wounded to the hospital.

He speculated that no fewer than 10 persons might have been killed in the bombing.
The spokesman for the North-East office of NEMA, AbdulKadir Ibrahim, said the office was aware of the attack.

He said it was gathered that the attack was by a suicide bomber, adding that the agency had deployed officials in the scene to evacuate the dead and assist the injured to the hospital.
