Corruption: FG deploys ICPC officials in airports

THE Federal Government has deployed officials of the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission in major airports across the country in a bid to check corruption at the various facilities.

The government said it had installed the agency’s CCTV cameras at the airports to help detect corrupt officers. The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Aviation, Mrs. Binta Bello, said the initiative was to engender growth, confidence and transparency in the aviation industry, as it was imperative to collaborate with the ICPC to effectively reduce the incidents of corruption in the sector.

Bello, in a statement issued by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority on Sunday, said the Federal Ministry of Aviation, ICPC and the United Nations Development Programme had all unanimously agreed to take concerted efforts to exterminate corruption from the aviation industry.

According to her, the fight against corrupt practices at the airport was made possible by signing the Memorandum of Understanding between the ministry and the anti-corruption agency in 2014. She further stated that based on the MoU, there would be continuous and sustained deployment of ICPC staff to maintain surveillance at the major airports and infusion of ethical values into professional practices of stakeholders in the aviation sector.

Others, she said, include “mandatory training at ICPC academy on ethics, professional standards, moral values for officials in the industry and installation of ICPC facilities, such as CCTV cameras for the detection of corrupt officers.”

Bello observed that the collaboration had reduced the activities of touts at the Lagos and Abuja international airports. She, therefore, urged the agency to sustain the tempo of its surveillance activities at the nation’s airports. The Director-General of the NCAA, Capt. Muhtar Usman, revealed that four officers of the authority were members of Anti-Corruption Transparency Unit, and two had undergone training on anti-corruption crusade.
